History

The Music Resource Center opened its doors in Duluth in May of 2011 thanks to the efforts of founder Crystal Pelkey and the Armory Arts and Music Center. We are now in our fifth year of operation. We currently reside at Sacred Heart Music Center and plan to move into a fully restored and renovated Duluth Armory in the near future.

In our first four years, we’ve served youth from middle and high schools throughout our community. Our students have written, recorded, and produced several full length, demo, and compilation CDs, shot and produced their own music videos, and performed at a variety of community events, festivals, and music venues.

Our program is modeled after the Music Resource Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, which was founded in 1995 by songwriter Jonathan Hornsby, brother of legendary pianist Bruce Hornsby, area musicians, including the Dave Matthews Band, and community leaders who were committed to keeping teenagers out of trouble and engaged in high interest learning activities.

With such a strong foundation of support and such a wealth of passionate and talented youth, our future is bright!
